Sylvan Learning Center One-Week Summer Camp Workshops. Topeka, Lawrence, and Manhattan, Ks. Sylvan’s Summer Camp Workshops are 1-week classes designed to keep academics in your student’s busy summer! All classes are held Monday–Friday from 1–3 p.m. and cost $150. All classes are limited to ten students. The classes offered below are for students going into that grade. Speed Reading & Building Comprehension - High School & College Students can choose from June 5–9 or July 31–Aug. 4. Topeka Civic Theatre & Academy Summer Camps. Topeka, Ks. Theatre Camps for youth ages 4–18. They offer one-week, half-day sessions for “Teeny Tiny Players” (ages 4–6) and three-week, full-day sessions for youth ages 7 and up. Before and after-care is available for an extra fee. 2006 Summer Academy of the Visual Arts. Topeka, Ks. Now Enrolling! The summer academy offers art classes for middle and high school students. Running Mon., June 5–Fri., June 23, high schoolers attend from 8 a.m.–noon and middle schoolers attend from 8–11 a.m. Classes are held at Highland Park High School. High schoolers learn to recognize art elements and design principles, while working on craftsmanship and techniques, and enhancing their portfolios. Middle schoolers explore new media, experiencing work in 2-D and 3-D. Enrollment is first-come, first-served. Cost: $80/high schooler (who can receive .5 credit); $60/middle schooler. Googols Of Fun. Lawrence, Ks. All summer long, Googols will be offering camps that help children understand different cultures from around the world—past and present. Take a walk down The Great Wall of China, climb the Great Pyramids of Egypt, or go wild in the Australian Outback. Children will participate in various hands-on activities to get a better understanding of customs, celebrations, and history of cultures far different than those in America. G-Force Athletics. Lawrence, Ks. G-Force brings you Flip Flying Fun this summer! G-Force is offering 4-day session day camps and 2-day session overnight camps in June, July, and August. Camp includes cheer instruction, power tumbling, trampoline fun, arts and crafts, educational instruction, and field trips. Registration begins in April. Wildwood Outdoor Education Center. La Cygne, Ks. Wildwood (an ACA Accredited Camp) invites you to join them for a unique outdoor summer experience! Summer Adventure ($280) is a 5-day residential co-ed camp for ages 8–14. Summer Adventure I runs June 12–16; Summer Adventure II runs July 24–28. WOW (Women of Wildwood) is a 5-day residential camp for girls ages 10–15 years. It runs July 31–Aug. 4 and costs $280. Find YourSelf Leadership Camp is a 3-day residential co-ed camp for ages 14–17. YMCA of Topeka. Various locations. Choose from Adventure Camp for children who have completed Kindergarten through 12 years at the Kuehne Branch; Kids-in-Sports for children who have completed Kindergarten through 12 years at the Downtown Branch; Jr. Explorer for children who have completed Kindergarten through 8 years at Wanamaker Woods Church of the Nazarene; Hammond Outdoor for ages 8–12 years at YMCA Camp Hammond; Southwest Discovery for children who have completed Kindergarten through 12 years at the Southwest Branch; and Teen Leadership for kids 11–16 years at Logan Jr. High School. Helen Hocker Theater’s 2006 Summer Youth Theatre Workshops. Topeka, Ks. Enrollment for Helen Hocker Theater’s 2006 Summer Youth Theater Workshops has begun! Join them for some summer theater fun in Gage Park! Broadway Bound (ages 5–6) $130/session; First Steps to Broadway (ages 7–8) $130/session; Production Workshop (ages 9–11) $150/session; and Break-A-Leg Players (ages 12–13) $150/session. Session I is held June 5–23; Session II is held June 26–July 14; and Session III is held July 17–August 4. Lawrence Parks & Recreation Department - 2006 Summer Playgrounds. Lawrence, Ks. Summer Playgrounds for children ages 5–12 begins June 5. Participating parks this year: Quail Run Elementary, Sunflower Elementary, Deerfield Park, Holcom Park, Prairie Park, Edgewood Park, and South Park. Choose from the following 4-week sessions: June 5–30 or July 5–28. The parks will be supervised Mon.–Fri. from 9 a.m.–noon and 1–4 p.m. Children must be picked up promptly at noon and 4 p.m. The Lawrence Summer Food Program will offer free meals to children 18 years and under at the following neighborhood playground sites: South Park and East Lawrence Recreation Center from noon–1 p.m. Call 832-7940 for more information and cost. www.lprd.org
